It’s dark by the time we drop everything off at the bakery and head home in our respective cars. Pulling into the driveway, a lump forms in my throat, remembering how the morning started. I’m barely in the front door when Joy comes rushing down the stairs.

“Okay, he’s not here. Snowflake is missing. If we don’t find him, we should call Chad.”

Dad and Noelle come home to find us in the backyard with flashlights. If someone took Snowflake, I want to gather any clues we can while the evidence is fresh.

“There has to be some other reason he’s missing,” Dad says. “I agree that something strange is happening with the other dogs, but Snowflake is ten years old. He’s not exactly dog-napping material.”

A horrible thought enters my mind. “He’s not, but this is Chestnut Hills. News travels quickly. What if the dog-nappers found out I’m looking into the cases?” The question is barely out of my mouth when I look down and see it…a huge footprint in the snow.
